What Do the Bortle Scale Numbers Actually Mean?

The scale in one sentence

The Bortle scale is a nine-step rating of how dark a night sky is, running from Class 1 — a pristine dark-sky site — to Class 9, an inner-city sky where only the Moon, planets, and a handful of the brightest stars punch through. It was designed so that visual observers could describe sky quality with a single number instead of a paragraph.

It is not a measurement you take with an instrument. It is an estimate you make with your own eyes, using indicators like whether the Milky Way is visible and how much detail it shows.

What each class roughly looks like

  • Class 1–2 (excellent dark sites): The Milky Way is bright and richly structured, casting enough combined light to notice. Faint glows like the zodiacal light are visible. These skies generally require travel well away from towns.
  • Class 3–4 (rural to rural/suburban transition): The Milky Way is still obvious, though washed out toward the horizon, and light domes from distant towns are visible low in the sky.
  • Class 5–6 (suburban): The Milky Way is weak or visible only near the zenith on the best nights. The sky itself looks grayish rather than black.
  • Class 7–8 (city): The Milky Way is not visible at all. The sky glows, and only brighter stars and the main constellation patterns show.
  • Class 9 (inner city): Only the Moon, planets, and a few first-magnitude stars are reliably visible.

How to estimate your own class

Go outside on a clear, moonless night, let your eyes adapt for a good twenty to thirty minutes, and ask three questions. Can you see the Milky Way at all? If yes, does it show texture and dark lanes, or is it a faint smudge? And how black does the sky itself look between the stars? Your answers place you on the scale within a class or so, which is all the precision the scale is meant to deliver. Why the number matters for what you observe

The honest use of the Bortle scale is target selection, not despair. Bright targets — the Moon, planets, double stars, and the brightest star clusters — hold up well even under city skies, and NASA's monthly skywatching guides lean on exactly those objects because they work for everyone. Faint, diffuse targets like galaxies and nebulae are the ones that need dark skies, which is why observers travel for them.
