Which Moon Phase Is Best for Observing — and Why Isn't It Full?
The counterintuitive answer
Ask a newcomer when to observe the Moon and they'll say "when it's full." Ask an experienced observer and they'll say almost anything but full. The reason is lighting. At full Moon, sunlight hits the lunar surface nearly straight on from our point of view, so craters and mountains cast almost no visible shadows and the surface looks flat and washed out. The Moon is brightest then, but least three-dimensional.
The terminator is where the action is
The terminator is the line dividing lunar day from lunar night — the sunrise/sunset line creeping across the Moon's face as the phase changes. Along it, sunlight rakes across the surface at a low angle, throwing long shadows that make crater rims, central peaks, and mountain ranges stand out in dramatic relief. Features near the terminator look carved; the same features under high sun a week later nearly vanish.
This is why the classic advice is to observe between a few days after new Moon and a couple of days past first quarter: the terminator is well placed during convenient evening hours, and each night it reveals a new strip of terrain. The waning phases show the other half of the story, but require late-night or pre-dawn sessions.
Getting the phase data
For timing, use the primary source: the U.S. Naval Observatory's Astronomical Applications service publishes authoritative Moon phase dates, rise and set times, and the fraction of the Moon illuminated for any date and location. Two minutes there answers both lunar questions — what phase is it? and when is the Moon actually up from my location? — the second being the one people forget. A first-quarter Moon conveniently rides high in the evening sky; a waning crescent is a pre-dawn object.
The other half of the calculus: everyone else's targets
Moon phase doesn't just govern lunar observing — it governs everything, because moonlight brightens the whole sky. Deep-sky observers plan faint-galaxy and nebula sessions around new Moon, and meteor-shower watchers check whether the Moon will interfere with a shower's peak; NASA's monthly skywatching guide routinely notes when moonlight will help or hurt a given event. A sensible monthly rhythm falls out of this naturally:
- New Moon week: faint targets, dark-site trips, aurora attempts.
- Waxing crescent through first quarter: prime evening lunar observing along the terminator.
- Gibbous and full: the Moon owns the sky, so observe it for general views, or work double stars and planets, which shrug off moonlight.
- Waning phases: late-night lunar work, then back toward dark skies.
